This is one of the most controversial topics in the world , it is also one of the most misinterpreted and we would deal with it step by step.
Amplified Bible Ephesians 5:21-29,33 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
Wives, be subject (be submissive and adapt yourselves) to your own husbands as [a service] to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife as Christ is the Head of the church, Himself the Savior of [His] body. As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, So that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word, That He might present the church to Himself in glorious splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such things [that she might be holy and faultless].
Even so husbands should love their wives as [being in a sense] their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.
For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and carefully protects and cherishes it, as Christ does the church,
However, let each man of you [without exception] love his wife as [being in a sense] his very own self; and let the wife see that she respects and reverences her husband [that she notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates, and esteems him; and that she defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly].
Point Number 1.
God expects submission from both males and females, each believer is instructed to submit to each other and that instruction isn’t tied down to gender.
Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). Ephesions 5:21
This means that as believers, out of reverence to Christ, we must place each other’s desires in esteem, submission is simply yielding willingly to another persons desires.
Submission within and out of reverence for Christ would simply entail deferring seeing to another’s wishes within the context of what is acceptable in Christ.
Point Number 2.
A “Wife” should submit to her “Husband”.
Other than submission to a father that is the obligation of every child, submission to the Man of God in the form of obedience which is expected of any believer, no woman is obligated to submit to just any man on the streets in the way of Christ and The Church. That is exclusively reserved for her husband.
Now that we have established the submission in this scripture that is general to The Church and that which is only expected within the institution of marriage, you must submit to your husband as a wife the same way you would to Christ as a Christian.
Now, not a lot of people like hearing this because we have been fed a tainted version of this scripture for so long that the original intent is missing.
The reason for this would be discussed later but that’s the instruction, submit. The moment a woman is married, she is no longer under the authority of her family or even her pastor, she is under the authority of her husband.
Because of the magnitude of this, Paul warns us to not be unequally yoked.
In marriage, you’d find yourself in a tight corner if the person you’ve been instructed to submit to isn’t first submitted to Christ and then submitted to you as a member of the body of Christ.
I always say that not one word in scripture as inspired by The Holy Spirit is out of place. The instruction to submit to each other came first for a reason, God would make no man a god over the other.
Submission as is being shouted out today is trying to take the woman back to the curse in Genesis, the man is not to lord over you, that was a curse and it was taken away by the blood!
Point number 3.
Husband, love as Christ loved.
It is the love of Jesus that enables the church to submit to Him because in our own power, we can’t.
To preach submission to the woman without preaching love to the man is like telling mankind to drop their sinful nature without the Blood of Jesus! It’s impossible!
Yes I know, women have lived with men who couldn’t love and all of that but submission is different from subservience.
Submission means to yield or give way to another, subservience means to be useful in an inferior capacity.
Submission is willingly done, subservience is grudgingly given.
The instruction to Love in The way of Christ and the Church in a marriage relationship is given because that’s the only way over human can submit to the other fully. Truth is, love a woman and she is ready to do anything for you.
The love of Christ was given freely, without expectations and spurred by that great love, submission flowed from our heart willingly.
In conclusion, an interpretation of that scripture would be;
Be mutually submitted to one another in Christ and in that submission, wives should submit to a husband who loves just as Christ loves the church (irrespective of and in spite of flaws).
Note: This instruction was given on the basis of the fact that we are not unequally yoked in the institution of marriage, that the man has the capacity to love you like Christ because he is in Christ and that that love would let him in the decisions that you are obligated to submit to.
In the occasion that you are married to an unbeliever, you still owe your husband submission subject of course to what is right and wrong in Christ Jesus.
Finally, that one party defaults on their fulfillment of this assignment doesn’t give the other any right to, remember, everyman shall account for himself.
Let me know what you think,
Hugs, kisses and Lots of love,
